Retriever Training Verbal Commands
Field Commands |

| Back |
A) From a remote sit position, turn around 175 or 135 degrees to the left or right based on my hand signal and run in a straight line no matter what is in your path. This command is later only used as a reinforcement to the hand signals and is should not be needed if the dog can see your hand signals clearly.
B) When the dog is already running out the command Back is used to push the dog to continue or speed up their current path. C) When he can't see you, Back means turn around and run out until directed otherwise. |
| Come | Run straight to you and when he reaches you go to the front position unless given a hand signal to go to the heal or knoze position. This is the same as a whistle come |
| Sit | Sit immediately and face you perfectly straight. This is the same as a whistle sit |
| Over | Commonly this is ued to tell the dog to turn and run 90 degrees to left or right based upon my hand signal. We do not use this command in preference of left and right to be more precise. |
| Hledej | Find the dead bird, do not give up until you find it, do not look to you for help (pronounced "hleday"). This is the same as a whistle Find it. |
| Fetch | Fetch the object |
| Hold | Hold on to the object in your mouth, do not EVER drop it (unless I tell you to or at a bucket flag, see advanced field commands) |
| Drop | Drop what ever is in your mouth |
| Leave It | When the dog is in the field, leave the bird or object alone and continue moving on. |
| Hup | Jump over the obstacle |
| Crawl | Get down and crawl |
| Down | Lay down. Same as a whistle Down |
At Heel Position |

| Back | Run straight out, do not turn or deviate your path no matter what is in way in the position we are facing for a blind retrieve (a blind) |
| Dogs Name | Run straight out, do not turn or deviate your path no matter what is in the way to get the brid you saw fall (a mark or memory fall). |
| Come, Come | When lining the dog for a blind/mark, We use the command come to get him to turn right when he is in the heel position and heel to turn left. The opposite if the dog is in the Konoza (right heel) position. We use come instead of here because here sounds too similar to heel. |

A) Sit by my left side
B) When lining, pivot left in small increments |
| Knooza (Knoza) |
Czech command for Heel. We use it for right side heeling.

| Gooooood | When lining the dog, this is the command given to confirm that you are now looking in the exact direction I want and if you keep looking there I will let you go with a Back or the Dogs Name Command. |
| Eh, Eh | When lining the dog, this is the sound given to tell him to stop looking where he is looking. This would typicaly be used when you are trying to line for a blind and he keeps looking in a direction you do not want him to. |
| Front | Sit in front of you facing you and look at my face. |
| Hey (quiet) | At the heel position, look straight out and pay attention |
| Hledaj (Hleday) | Means "Search in Czech. Go hunt in the area we are facing |
| Shake | You are now allowed to shake off the water. He must not shake until this command is given. |
| Quiet | Do not bark or whine (hopefully you never need to use this) |
| Birdie | Hint that you will go get the bird you saw fall. This always prefaces the command Dogs Name when sending. |
| Dead Bird or Bajant | Hint that you will be going for a blind and to ignore any birds you saw fall. This command always prefaces Back when sending. |
| Drop | Release the bird in your mouth into my hand |
| Couvej (Tsovey) | Means "Back Up" in Czech. A command we hope we will not need to use, but is necessary some times under judgement. This command is used to tell the dog to move back into the heel postion when he is too far forward. This command is softer and unknown to the judge but to the dog it means get back into the heel position now. This command is used to teach the dog to walk backwards. |

| Track It | Track the scent on the ground |
Upland Hunting |
|
| Hunt, hunt | Look for live birds in the grass (upland hunting). The dog should quarter the area |
| Ahead | Stay in front of you (upland hunting) |
| Quarter | Change your direciton and quarter back the other way. This is the same as the Quarter Over whistle command |
Advanced Field Commands |
|
| Left | From the remote sit position, run left 90 degrees in a straight line (We only use this when he can not see you or to reinforce a hand signal) |
| Right | From the remote site position, run right 90 degrees in a straight line (We only use this when he can not see you or to reinforce a hand signal) |
| Out | From any remote sitting position, face 180 degrees away from you and look out. Do not turn your head and look at you.* |
| Gee | When sitting remotely and looking at you, turn 90 degrees to his right (do not run, turn a sit) and look straight out in that area and do not turn your head and look at you. (pronounced like the letter G)* |
| Haw | When sitting remotely and looking at you, turn around 90 degrees to his left (do not run, just turn and sit) and look straight out in that area and do not turn your head and look at you.* |
| Face | When sitting remotely from any position, turn and face you squarely* |
| Go | In any remote sitting position other than facing you, run straight out in the position you are facing to get a blind* |
| Dogs Name | In any remote sitting position other than facing you, run straight out in the position you are facing to get a marked fall or memory* |
| Bucket |
Bring the bird to the bucket and drop it in it. This can literally be a bucket, a blue flag or a pile of birds

| Down | Lay down in the position you are currently facing. Keep looking in that direciton and do not turn your head and look at you. |
| Crawl | Do not run out, crawl |
| Couvej (Tsovey) | Means "Back Up" in Czech. Used when dog is in a remote position and you want him to move backwards. For example if you send him to Place and he creeps forward, the command Couvey would tell him to move backwards. |
| Place | Go to your spot and wait. Do not move unless commanded to. |
